Nocturnal Graves – An Outlaws Stand (Album Review)

From 2004 Nocturnal Graves had delivered their brand of venomous metal that only Australians can.

Honest, stripped back, and proud to be so named with an air of fatalism and inevitability.

From their opening salvo “Death to Pigs” on this their fourth full length, it is gloriously raw and unsubtle, combining the power of Death Metal, Thrash, and Black to melt it into an unholy brew that is as terrifying as it is attractive.

The insanity that is “Command for Conflict”, its call to arms, and its dive-bombing solos, “Beyond the Flesh” alternates “from pummeling to chaos with its homage to “The Devil Beyond the stars”. The musicianship is tightly controlled and driven by Decaylust and Sharpnels’s guitar work.

This is eight tracks of unbridled fury that are only for those with the darkest of hearts and strength in their convictions. It is unbridled as “Law of the Blade” attests, it is a predatory, accusatory statement of conviction. This is extreme metal-focused and delivered with a clean crisp sound and where there is literally “No Mercy for Weakness”. ‘’Across the Acheron’’ is pure heavy with its almost doom-like structure.

Nocturnal graves are the forebears of Satan, delivering with hatred and intent, a foreshadowing of what is to come. An Outlaws Stand delivers this in spades capturing their restless spirit and nihilism towards society, the chaos is visceral, measured, controlled, and brutal.
