N.Y. FURY is a hard rock band from the USA formed during the eighties heyday for hard rock evolution. With bands such as Van Halen, Kiss, Motley Crue, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi lighting up the world with a brand new and much heavier take on seventies rock, bass player Gene Hunter formed N.Y. FURY (formerly FURY). The band, with Gene as the driving force, performed regularly, had a great stage presence, amassed a huge following, and recorded a couple of demos in 1987, along with material for an album.

Eventually signing to a record label towards the tail end of the eighties, the band had a contract secured. And with an agreement in place to shoot music videos, the future looked very bright for N.Y. FURY – but tragically, it all fell apart when the record label owner was killed in a car accident! Gene and the band called it a day in 1990 without ever releasing an album…
…until thirty years later – in 2022, enter Eonian Records to release the band’s previously unreleased material! A sixty-minute compilation featuring fifteen songs, including the band’s two early demo recordings! ‘I Want It All’ is the first official N.Y. FURY release, and with hardly any modern day tweaks either – every song is presented in its original form! So for those of us old enough to remember the eighties, ‘I Want It All’ is a nostalgic reminder of how hard rock sounded back then – and for the youngsters of today, it’s an education on how hard rock sounded back then! But for anyone of any age, ‘I Want It All’ is the complete debut album of a band that during the eighties, was set to take over the world – ‘Play The Game’ bursting into life with an incredible amount of energy! Everything was big back then – the songs, the choruses, the band member’s hair! That’s why this style of hard rock become known as “hair metal” – cause back in the eighties nearly every band came under the banner of metal.
The album is full of energetic rockers, the title song ‘I Want It All’ an up-tempo swagger of melodic rock, touching on the iconic gallop of traditional heavy metal. And with a classic “foot on the monitor” feel, it’s easy to see, or rather hear, why N.Y. FURY was considered a metal band. Adopting a more mid-tempo mid-paced hard rock stance, ‘Danger | Face’ stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Kiss, Motley Crue, and Van Halen – and remember we’re talking about the eighties here. Such a great time for hard rock with so many bands coming through – Cinderella, Firehouse, Giant, Guns N’ Roses, Poison, Ratt, Slaughter, Sleeze Beez, and many many more.

I could go on forever! But I won’t – there’s an album to review. ‘Dance’ is bubbly and buoyant, portraying the party feel of many rock bands during the eighties. Happy mood inducing with the insane ability to plant smiles a mile wide on the faces of everyone – isn’t that what rock’s all about! And ballads too – N.Y. FURY delivering ‘If Only You Could See Me Now’ with top-level emotion and passion! Until a staggering change of tempo and pace, and we’re off and rocking hard once more.
It would seem that N.Y. FURY had an abundance of energy – it clearly shows across the first five songs! And continues on with the sixth – the smooth rocking ‘Hopin’ Love Will Come’. And the introduction of some classic sounding AOR – the band incorporating all major styles of rock into their music. And with the burgeoning sleaze rock/metal phenomena towards the end of the eighties bringing a little more attitude to rock than heard previously, N.Y. FURY got in on the act – ‘Sit On This’ having a double meaning! But also the band are displaying a more upfront and bolder approach to rock, ‘Sit On This’ is very much an in your face rock song! The energy and oomph in every song is incredible, ‘Bad Enough’ shows a lot of punch too! The band not lacking when it comes to powerful heavy hitting hard rock. If only things had turned out differently back in ’89, N.Y. FURY could have ruled the rock world for the past thirty years!
Bringing the soft rock style of music to the fore, the band continue their roam around the rock genre with ‘City Lights’ – a mellow meander of serenity! Until the band kicks it up a few notches, and the trademark N.Y. FURY sound rises to the surface – hard rocking rock and roll with a happy attitude and an infectious streak the size of the East Coast! ‘Let The Orgy Commence’ appears to be a crowd pleasing instrumental – and recorded live too! You can clearly hear the crowd going totally wild for a band that was very much on the up at the time. And balladry returns en force with ‘Just Tell Me You Love Me’, the band remaining mellow for longer this time. So raise your lighters high in the air and sway from side to side to salute a top-notch ballad simply oozing with emotion.
And remaining mellow, ‘Believe’ will keep you holding your lighters aloft as it parades a soothing mellowness. And a feeling that it’s perfect to be played at the tail end of a disco when the lights go down for a slow dance – that time of the evening when lovers smooch and fall further in love! And as it’s an instrumental, there are no lyrics to distract you from whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears! God what a romantic tune! Which is completely the opposite of the up-tempo and frivolous ‘My American Pie’. For another instrumental, the band raucously strut their stuff with attitude! The final two songs are the early demos of ‘Hunting The Streets’ and ‘Fighting For Your Love’ – both featuring the band’s energetic and up-tempo style of rock. And if proof were ever needed that N.Y. FURY could have and should have made it big – this is it. All fifteen songs here are what eighties hard rock was all about, so if it’s nostalgia or an education you’re after – happy listening.
Overall, up-tempo and heavy-hitting hard rock full of energy and an infectious level that’s beyond amazing.
