M-R: Tell us a little bit about Syryn.
SYRYN is a 5-piece metal band from Calgary Alberta. Formed in mid-2017 in the mind of Sloan Voxx, who, after seeing Amanda Kiernan (Into Eternity) perform at a local metal festival in 2015 said to herself: “I have to do that!”. After stewing over the idea for quite some time, Sloan decided to put a plan into action. Knowing that she wanted to develop a powerful project and that would make an impact on music lovers of all kinds, she set out on her search to find members and eventually landed on the lineup you see today! “She lured us in, and we’re hooked!” The lineup you see today is solidified by Paulo Rage (Guitar), Byron Gorieu (Guitar), Lyxx Rose (Bass) and Bryan Campbell (Drums).
M-R: Your debut album will come out next month (January). What are your expectations?
We think (and hope) it will be well-received! We put a lot of work into it, and we think it shows. Our album tells a story about a Siren’s emotional journey through overtaking and killing everyone on a passing ship. We want them to feel what she feels! Her confidence, fears, and doubts in one. We want them to ride the waves with her… literally! The most we can hope for is that our music will seduce people into wanting to listen to it more, to sing along, to come to see us play live, and to anticipate what will be coming in the future.
M-R: I listened to the single Dead Men Tell No Tales which it’s a great song, and it has many metal elements. How do you describe your music?
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to listen. We are really glad you enjoyed it! Dead Men Tell No Tales is the first song we wrote collectively with our current lineup, so it’s a good example of what can be expected in the future. We would describe our music as unpredictable and exciting! We’re a bit of a shit-mix when it comes to our genre. We’ve been called Pirate Metal, Power Metal, Thrash, Powercore, etc. But overall, we would describe it as powerful and melodic but also hard-hitting, energetic and catchy. If you don’t leave our album listening experience with at least one of our songs stuck in your head, we’d be surprised!
M-R: Reading a little bit on the internet, Syryn has a concept of Sirens as a band. What influenced this concept?
Sloan has always loved the effect music can have on people. How it triggers emotion and how it can captivate and enchant those who listen. As a vocalist, she has always loved the mythological folklore of the Siren and how it encompasses just that. The death… well, that just comes along with the territory. Haha. A lot of the lyrical content is also metaphorical so that it can be interpreted in many different ways.
M-R: Which bands were your direct influence on Syryn’s music?
Well, each of us comes from different musical backgrounds, but I’d say the most influential bands for us would be Iron Maiden, Dio, Megadeth, Unleash the Archers, Guns N’ Roses, Kalmah, Testament, Genesis, etc.
M-R: Any upcoming shows for the fans?
Actually yes, we have a small group of tours coming up throughout Alberta followed by a festival in Vancouver for our debut Vancouver show in support of the new album. We are very much looking forward to playing both areas we have played before, as well as new areas where we can make new friends and fans!
