Sydney certainly turned up in their masses to the Bald Faced Stag to witness the one and only Cattle Decapitation take to the stage in Sydney for the first time in 5 years, selling out the show. Arriving off the back of their critically and commercially acclaimed album, ‘The Anthropocene Extinction’, this was a night to bound to be one gig to never forget, full of mosh pits, blast beats and insanity. Featuring an all-star Aussie line-up in support, Sydney was certainly in for a treat tonight.
Sydney’s Deiformity opened the night up, with their blend of old school death metal warming the crowd up for what was to come later in the evening. Blast beats and double kick filled the room as this 5-piece commanded the stage and blasted through their furious set.
Up next we had local heavy weights ‘Daemon Pyre’, who performed their first ever show this evening without their incredible front-man Sam Rilatt. While Sam’s absence was noticeable, both drummer Simon O’Malley and guitarist Andrew Lilley tore through new and old songs with ease, with newer material receiving a very warm reception from the growing crowd.
The lights dimmed and the intro for ‘Echoes to Come’ only means one thing…Psycroptic were up now! These Tasmanian metal titans have had a stellar run and seeing them with Cattle Decapitation was an absolute treat. Brothers Joe and Dave Haley are locked in together like no one else. Playing a setlist featuring old favourites like Ob(Servant) and The Colour of Sleep, Psycroptic continue to prove time and time again that they are one of the best live acts and one of the most original bands in metal. While their set felt too short this time around, their new material will ensure that we witness one of their insane headline tours soon.
The crowd swelled as Cattle Decapitation took to the stage, with Sydney-siders waiting 5 years for this moment to happen again. Travis Ryan’s command of the crowd is clear from the get-go as they blast through prime cuts, The Carbon Stampede and Dead Set on Suicide from their 2012 release, ‘Monolith of Inhumanity’. The crowd is left feeling well done in the heat of the Stag as Dave McGraw’s punishing double kick combined with Josh Elmore’s dizzying lead guitar tenderise us on songs off their latest album, ‘The Anthropocene Extinction’. Todd Stern’s last-minute addition as replacement for bassist Derek Engemann on this tour was seamless, with Cattle Decapitation sounding as tight and monstrous as ever.
Forced Gender Reassignment proved to be the highlight of the night for many, while Mosh pits ensued as Travis’ manic howls lead the band through fan favourites ‘Kingdom of Tyrants’ and ‘Manufactured Extinct.’ Tonight makes it clear that Cattle Decapitation are a band who are untouchable and are still at the top of their game and can still only go up. As they closed tonight with ‘Your Disposal’, everyone left knowing that what they witnessed was a seasoned band deliver one hell of an incredible show that was nothing short of amazing. Well worth the 5-year wait? F***ing oath it was!
