I was asked to review a band that I had never heard of in a genre I am not a big fan of Hair metal and Glam metal. And as I love music and enjoy stretching my tastes, I decided to do it and what I found in the 38 minutes 31 seconds was not something I expected. Crosson is a mix of Glam metal and Hair metal with splashes of Traditional metal. At first glance, the artwork screams Steel Panther, but by no means is this anything like the smut-laden gods of double entendre. In fact, it is the complete antithesis. From the first track to the last you are treated (if this is your bag) to very wholesome radio-friendly songs that would have not been out of place on any Def Leppard albums. Now, wait before you go running to your Slayer and Venom records. This is the kind of pallet cleanser we all need in our collection. This may sound like I am being nasty to the guys in this band but I am truly not. We all need something we can just throw on and sing along to. Also, remember when you were young you did not start listening to the likes of Rotting Christ or Cannibal Corpse. Most of you would have been weaned on the Motley Crew, White Snake, Iron Maiden, and Deep purple the list could go on.
So, before you snigger and think this is throw away and too light take a flick through your collection and I will bet my bottom dollar you have something like this in it. There are moments, I grant you that sound like Spinal Tap. The title track Rock and Roll Love Affair is one but that’s not a bad thing is it (let’s not be music snobs here guys) – in fact, it made me smile. The guys hail from the land down under Sydney and have been making their catchy form of Sleazy Glam metal for some time now to good reviews. There is plenty for all here. The vocalist has moments where his idols to come out David Coverdale and Joe Elliot to mention but a couple. It really does seem to be very well thought out in the image and musical direction. It would be churlish of me not to mention the two female singers that are a mix of backing vocals and dancers (they add movement and excitement to their live shows) check out a video on the streaming platform of your choice.
I was amazed to find out none other Duane Baron of Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crew, Alice Cooper and Poison fame mixed this record. Look, I’m putting this out there this is not my cup of tea but that’s not saying that it is not great stuff.
The songs like Rest in peace have a nice underlying message of eternal love through the ages. There is one truly enjoyable moment in Weak at the knees (or a hot brunette) it’s like Sleaze light all the sleaze without the smut. So if you’re looking for some fun and want like me to support local Metal scene why not try these guys. Remember that’s what streaming platforms are for a try before you buy.
And god knows now more than ever the industry needs bands like this bunch of fun-seeking spandex-wearing rock warriors.
Pop your brain out jack the volume to 11 and give 2020 a dose of the 80’s it’s needed for some time with Crosson Rock and Roll Love Affair.
