Interview by Andrew Massie

Within Destruction

Blistering the opaque realms between extreme metal and electronic tunes with their unique concoction of pure relentless metal, WITHIN DESTRUCTION will be serving up their high-octane live shows across Australia for their first time ever. Established as one of the finest acts in the deathcore community with their previous efforts Void, 2016 and Deathwish, 2018, the group returns with their highly anticipated new album ‘Yōkai’ via Ultra Heavy Records. Boasting an audacious approach to music with metalcore and trap influences,’Yōkai’ is handcrafted to pique the interest of the global metal community, delivering unexpected guest features such as Bill $aber from Ghostemane and presented in a high-quality production package flaunting a Japanese Aesthetic.

We talk to vocalist Rok Rupnik about the tour as well as their new musical direction on their latest album and more.

On the band’s first ever Australia tour:

If everything works out this is going to be our first time in Australia so we’re super stoked. It’s only a shame that we’re actually trying to get to Australia in times like this, I kinda wish we had done that sooner but it is what it is and we’re hoping for the best.

On playing shows again since the pandemic:

It’s been the longest time we haven’t done any shows but for us it kind of fit well because we were actually in the process of recording and writing new stuff so that was actually cool. But yeah it shows, once you start doing shows again you’re kind of out of shape and you need to get back into that touring and concert cycle. It’s really strange when you think about it, when you’re so used to touring it kind of becomes like a habit or something you’re used to but once you don’t do it for a year or two it really becomes kind of strange going back on stage and performing again and it feels like you need to get back in shape again

On the latest album Yokai and the new musical direction:

This album is different to what we used to do in the past. To be honest it wasn’t that difficult to write this new album just because we had two new guitarists and they brought a lot to the table because from previous albums, most of the songwriting was actually done by our drummer (Luka Vezzosi). But now that we’ve had two new guitarists, they’ve contributed a lot to our sound, to the ideas, to everything. S it was kind of like a breathe of fresh air for the band and it makes sense to incorporate that into the new album. In terms of the future we’re always looking towards making a different album than the one previous so we’re kind of not aiming for the same sound with each and every album, we’re trying to explore new ideas and new genres to incorporate into our music. So we’re always open and never constraining ourselves to one particular sound or one particular way to make our music.
