Ironstone – Prophecy (EP Review)

Ironstone

Bendigo’s Ironstone has true potential. As you listen to their debut EP Prophecy, which you really should, they already have a polished, technical, melodic, and individual sound.

This EP is truly solid. The songs were self-recorded and produced while being mixed and mastered by Chris Themelco. Lead guitarist Edward Warren expresses that working with Chris was a huge learning experience for the band, and judging by the end result they used that knowledge tremendously. Each song sounds truly massive, having that crisp and tight production of tech bands while leaning on layered vocal harmonies, Ironstone has a world-class sound.

Cracking lead single Downpour brings an enchanting Egyptian theme and a big chorus while never backing down on the heavy. Ironstone does not take their foot off the accelerator for the rest of Prophecy either with the second single Bound also delivering that sharp and tight technical guitar sound, a great solo, big harmonised vocal melody, great use of dynamics and another towering chorus.

The quality barely dips for the remainder of the release. One of my favourite tracks, Better Unseen is a more concentrated and distilled track, packing a lot of Ironstone’s sound into its three-minute journey, killer song. The final track Origin is a real belter, drawing heavily from Periphery, Ironstone shape that to their individual sound, and boy can these guys write a chorus.

Prophecy is another proving point that Aussie metal deserves more attention from the more popular media. Ironstone has all the elements to make a hell of an impact, they have already worked so hard, recently having to change singers and re-invent themselves, and goddam they should be proud. While the release is not perfect, it is really close, with only a few teething problems that I am sure will not be a hindrance in the future given more time with the new line-up.
