Zack Elabdi - Portals

It is fair to state that Zack Elabdi’s newest single follows his identity, in the sense that the clear influences displayed on his previous release “From the Higher Ground” are matched on “Portals”.

It is an instrumental work where the main component is the diversity of time signatures, putting the emphasis on the progressive metal influence. The lead guitar parts are to be underlined as they are very tasty, in the sense that they catch you and you could find yourself singing along to them, and they are not a complicated and unnecessary show of skill, but rather simple and efficient use of melody.

The rhythm patterns though are not my cup of tea, as they rely more on time signature complexity while throwing in occasional guitar chugs, rather than straightforwardness, brutality, efficiency, and aggression, which in my opinion are the principal elements to call a working metal.

Nonetheless, this is not to undermine the great amount of creativity and efficacity in the sense that most artists don’t release material twice in a year, and that’s a fact to be saluted and encouraged.
