Vessel – Vagabond Blues (Album Review)

Every time I pick up a CD the first question I ask myself “What am I looking at?”. The album cover is a very nicely designed scene of an outer space scenario. Ok, so far so good! Artwork should be a good indicator of what to expect. Right? I’m getting excited here.

There are 2 things that intrigued me off the bat. One is the band name Vessel. Is this name meant to be an experience as in when you are listening to their music you’re being transported into a different world? I couldn’t think of any other reasons why they would name themselves that. When you think about it – it’s a cool name, just doesn’t hit you at first. The 2nd thing that is interesting is the album name “vagabond blues”, vagabond meaning travelling to places without a destination; I would interpret this as living a carefree life. So if I interpret this correctly, it is simply music to sit back, relax and enjoy. Makes sense.

Listening to the music itself, this is what I would call soft or hard-rock. Sounds like something from the 1990s. Being a strict metal guy, the rocky guitar tone does not get me excited at all. Really lightly distorted rocky guitar tone, at times you can hear clean guitars and different tempos over basic straight drum beats. OK, clean singing vocals. You can clearly see the compositions and the image is the feature here, not the vocals.

Don’t worry they’re well in tune with this recording!

The sound itself as you would have probably worked out from the previous paragraph is old-school. Today a lot of bands aim for modern sound. But hey, it works! The production is good, well tracked and mixed.

You couldn’t ask for more for this sort of sound. The compositions are surprisingly catchy, with good song structures. Some songs are instrumental in their entirety. The boys have clearly put effort and experimented here with different sounds. Although at first, this reminds me of pub background music, this DOES grow on you after a while.

I can’t help to admire the author’s creativity. I would enjoy something like this when travelling. Definitely give this a flick on long journeys. It does feel like you’re travelling somewhere when listening to this!

Overall this cool, but at the same time, nothing’s new. This probably was a thing may be in the 90s but really not sure about now. Although I can appreciate the efforts I would recommend the author to consider either mix it up more with different genres or invent something new in its entirety.
