INTERVIEW: Amoderndeath

Interview by Adrian 'Dren' Barham

Amoderndeath

Amoderndeath are a 5-piece Metal band from Adelaide that formed in mid 2012. We grabbed a few words from the band to find out more.

Metal-Roos: For those who are unfamiliar with AModernDeath, how would you describe your sound?

Yeah, um… groove death… we’re just trying to be as groovy as possible but people have told us that we sound like old death metal bands. We always try to keep a solid foundation in that style.

Metal-Roos: I know have released an EP called “Odyssey” are there any plans for a future full length album?

At the moment, we only have the EP but we are writing stuff for an album. We are trying to get to a good point before we do more recordings.

Metal-Roos: Do you have a steady line up at the moment?

laughs It is right now, yeah… we just recently recruited two new members, Jarrad Taylor and Charlie Young. Jarrad is on drums and Charlie on bass…

Metal-Roos: And the rest of the band?

… we have Anthony Bambridge on lead guitar, Ryan Nias on vocals and myself on rhythm guitars (Sean Tienery Smith)

Metal-Roos: How long has the band been together for?

As a full line up probably about two years now…

Metal-Roos: Did you meet in high school like most other bands tend to do?

Well, myself and the former bassist actually met in primary school. We have been mates since then. He had been playing bass for a little while.Yeah, so me and the drummer wanted to start up a band and I told my mate, give me 6 months and I’ll try to learn some guitar. Then we went around and found Anthony and Ryan and that was that.

Metal-Roos: What was it like to have the honour of opening New Dead 5 festival with such a prestigious line up of bands?

Opening New Dead…. yeah, it was good man! It was a lot better than we expected, really. The turn out was pretty extreme considering how early it was in the day – but it was nice to set the mood for it.

Metal-Roos: Who are the main influences on AModernDeath’s sound?

For me personally, a huge influence would have to come from Gojira; I’m a massive fan of the band for a few years now. Their style has influenced me and makes me want to play metal even more now. I’m also into Mastadon and some old school death metal bands, but definitely for musical style Gojira for sure.

Metal-Roos: What was the 1st albums you ever bought?

My first album… sorry it’s Jarrad, well, the first album I was introduced metalwise were two at the same time. They were …and justice for all by Metallica and The Great Southern Trendkill by Pantera. I was about 8 years old, my older brother was playing it and so they were the first that I got.

Metal-Roos: What was the worst thing you guys have done while being drunk?

Well, I tried to walk to the bar and get another drink while my guitar was still connected and nearly brought the whole amps down… it was before I had a wireless.

Metal-Roos: A kid walks up to you and wants to know about heavy metal, what album do you tell them to listen too?

Kill em all… You have to get that somewhere! Paranoid by Sabbath….(in the background…what was the question…oh wow)… ….well, I would have to go an Iron Maiden album like Powerslave or something like that or on the other side of the spectrum… .Cannibal Corpse, Butchered at Birth… laughs ha ha just ruin ’em … ….you have to throw some Pantera in there as well!

AModernDeath would like to thank everyone who has supported them, shouted them a beer or just said g’day to them. The guys are in the process of putting out new material shortly so go out and have a listen, support local metal….\m/
