When I heard the term Dwarven metal, I was not sure what to expect and was hoping that it would not feel gimmicky. I was pleasantly surprised, overall Wind Rose has captured the Dwarven feel while creating some truly awesome metal music and combining this very well.
The latest album Warfront begins with “Of War and Sorrow” a beautiful haunting 2-minute intro that leads you to “Army of Stone“, a high-energy triumphant track, which sets the scene appropriately for the rest of the album.
“Tales of War” has an upbeat tempo with catchy hooks and rousing vocals to make this a memorable track. The middle section has an awesome folk melody before it returns you to the energy of the verses.
“Fellows of the Hammer” is where I fully get the Dwarven feel, I can imagine the forging of steel and the dwarven brotherhood. The vocals are impressive and uplifting.

A lot of the tracks on this album are over 5 minutes in length, which had me zoning out a little in some places, but in saying that, each track had something within it that grabbed my attention. Wind Rose definitely sticks to their particular brand and it works for them.
“Gates of Ekrund” is storytelling at its best, the vocal delivery is clear and deliberate to give you the full meaning of the song. The chorus calls for forces to unite, shouting Fire! Fire and Sword! This will be an absolutely wicked crowd participation moment live. This is the best track on the album for me.
What I enjoyed most about this album is the driving riffs and rhythms, which could become mundane if it wasn’t for the clever melodies that shine through to give the song individuality. One moment you’re listening to a stomping metal song and then you are carried along on folk-like melody, or transported away with stunning melancholy.
“The Battle of the Five Armies” is 7 minutes heavy, with layers of melodies that tell tales of dwarven history. There’s a bit of a Sabaton feel to this song in some places, but this is only fleeting as once again the beautiful melodies meander through parts of the track, which pulls you into another world.
Another epic length track is “I Am the Mountain”, this one is not only epic in length but in the feel of the music. It exudes emotion, the vocals are full of passion and variations that keep the song interesting all the way through. The music is majestic and full of glory.

This is another standout track for me.
The final track on the album, “Tomorrow Has Come” is another glory-filled moment, the soft acoustic nature of this is stunning, and with clean and emotive vocals it is a fitting end to the journey that is Warfront. It has an “after the battle” feel, you can sense the loss and the sadness that comes from war, Wind Rose certainly knows how to create the right atmosphere with their folklore.
Overall a very good album, and if you’re a fan of Tolkien and power metal, this will be the perfect combination for you.
