The Dead Daisies might not be the youngest guys out there but they have come forth with their 5th studio album, “Holy Ground” and show what it is to rock.

The band is made up of:

Glenn Hughes – Bass, Vocals (Deep Purple)

David Lowy – Rhythm guitar( Red Phoenix, Mink)

Doug Aldrich – Lead guitarist (Whitesnake/Dio)

Deen Castronovo – Drums (Bad English, Journey)

Originally formed with David Lowy and Jon Stevens (Noiseworks) in 2013 they recruited a rotating lineup over the years. The influences of all these music magicians reflect in the music giving each album unique sounds. This album is fronted by the most recent vocalist, a man labelled as the “Voice of Rock” and inducted into the hall of fame for Deep Purple. David Lowy is the son of Westfield Tycoon, Frank Lowy, and apart from being a former businessman, he is also an accomplished aerobatic pilot. Now he flies a Flying-V on stage amongst the greats.

The album was recorded by producer Ben Grosse at La Fabrique Studio in the South of France and released early in 2021.

Their music is energetic classic rock with potent crunching chords punctuated with foot-stomping beats in between. The opening title track “Holy Ground” kicks things into gear early on. “Chosen and Justified” has some wisps of Velvet Revolver going in there. Slash helped with some songs back in 2013 so perhaps there were some techniques picked up. Some bands might stick to what they know without evolving their sound. With these guys, they are producing a mix between old and new by incorporating newer tones yet reflecting back on influences of old. “Unspoken” was written on Glenn’s acoustic Gibson SJ-200 and then the music was electrocuted to give it that oomph.

This album has similar song structures to it usually leading to a high vocal platform and then what can be fairly repetitive chorus parts. Solos punctuate the scene sporadically with heaps of force. “Far Away” ends the album with a slow start and a classic rock finish. “Come Alive” has cracking riffage going on here leading into a more old school rock song.

Overall this album shows that the Dead Daisies are aware of their age but refuse to believe that you should do anything but rest and rather “live your life free” – Come Alive.
