Immortal Guardian – Age of Revolution (Album Review)

Many modern metal bands are trying to either meld a few genres together, or refine genres that currently exist, but I feel there are few who are trying to push the boundaries of a genre in the same way that Immortal Guardian does in their album Age of Revolution.

While they call themselves “Super Metal” – a term I cannot bring myself to support without evoking images from Super Mario 3 – I would say that their unique brand of Power Metal melds something amazingly unapologetic. These guys aren’t trying to just release another Power Metal album, they’re trying to change Power Metal from within; which is a difficult thing to do in a genre that is very centred around its identity.

The guitars are what you would expect, amazingly intricate and precise. A part of me is hoping that this release will see a resurgence of ‘guitar-orientated-metal’, which a secret passion of mine. Vocally, Zema goes between the pipes of an angel and the gutturals of a demon. While the gutturals are few and far between, it’s an amazing and welcome addition.

There are a lot of different instruments used in this release which this reviewer enjoyed, but the most surprising was a Saxophone solo, which still worked well in the mix.

The political agenda is not lost on this listener and provides another hook for repeat listens. But all of this aside, it is the pushing of boundaries that really makes this album something special. An excellent effort. Suitable for those who wield a battle axe, but only on weekends because you still need to pay bills.
