Angelcrypt – Dawn Of The Emperor (Album Review)

Angelcrypt is a melodic death WW1 themed band from Malta, and they recently released a 10 track beast of an album. Lyrically, the theme of Dawn Of The Emperor express’s the trauma, pain and stress of warfare, focusing on critical and tragic moments in WW1 such as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Ethereal choir and synth begin the album with military drumming setting the scene for the war-torn album. Across all 10 songs, the guitars have powerful distorted riffs with heavy crunch sound in rhythm guitar, and a heavy metal sounding influence in lead guitar. Bass comes through nicely with a pronounced tone. The distinctive harsh death growl vocals were articulate and still fierce with melodic death screeching.

Repetition throughout the album has to change dynamics that emphasise each instrument, complemented with catchy fills and slamming breakdowns. The production of this album is clear and well put together, making it polished to listen to from start to finish.

Overall, Angelcrypt is a solid Melodic Death Metal band with songs that are creatively written and perfectly performed. I rate this album 4.5 out of 5 roos,  but instead of roo’s let’s make it 4.5 Martyred Souls.
