Artach – Sworn To Avenge (Album Review)

Hailing from St John in the Newfoundland/Labrador Province, Artach is a 2 piece black metal band who take their inspiration from the bleak conditions in which they live.  Their latest offering is Sworn to Avenge which offers 8 tracks of desolate black metal with a myriad of unpredictable dimensions.

The first 2 tracks begin with howling winds and maniacal laughter and this provides the unmistakable atmosphere of icy, frostbitten black metal at its finest.

There is definitely an interesting mix of influences that come forth strongly in the music and vocals, my first impression was a mixture of Venom and Bathory with added layers of extremely grim and chilling black metal.

There are interesting tempo changes, which allow booming drum fills to cut through the riffs, and the only word I can use to describe the vocals is deranged.

But this band hasn’t just recreated black metal from the past, they have included melodies and riffs that are surprising and intelligently placed to provide the listener with unforeseen twists and turns throughout.

The album is comparable to watching a movie with astonishing twists where you think “I wasn’t expecting that!

”   It shifts in intensity from chaotic black metal to more melodic and harmonious moments in the most spectacular manner.

Again I have to mention the vocals, they are intriguing and unhinged and provide a visualisation of a person wracked with torture.

A very refreshing display of black metal from a band that is clearly intent on forging their own path.
