Breaking the Silence – Breaking the Silence (EP Review)

Breaking The Silence

Breaking the Silence is a Canadian thrash/power metal band that has just released its self-titled debut EP. Right off the bat, their fusion of power and thrash is a personal love of mine the melody and powerful vocals of power metal are an amazing compliment to the harsher and speeder thrash sound.

The first song Thou Shall Rise is a very strong start. Combing sounds from heavy metal, power metal and thrash all melding into a headbanging tune that reminds me of Warlock’s sound; Lead singer Mar K even sounds strikingly similar to Doro.

The second track Cry of Fear takes on a more haunting sound, with a slower start that sets the vibe of the song before the speed picks up. The guitar work is stellar as it flows through the song with varying tempo and melody which is accompanied by clean and quick drum work that will no doubt have you tapping your foot along.

We are left with the track Sacrifice of Mind is a triumph end to the EP with soaring vocals and guitar riffs that invoke the loud sound stage of a power metal song. A perfect song to a cap of a great album.

This is one of the most surprising bands I have listened to this year, with a sound that is reminiscent of early Blind Guardian. A key component to Power Metal is the vocals and Mar K knocks them out of the park here, able to sing clean high notes or more aggressive powerful notes and even throwing some growls in. The variation they have in their songs not only with melody but tempo, riffs and vocals have me very excited to see what these guys can produce in the future.
