Carthus - Images Of Tyranny

Melbourne (Aus) five-piece Carthus release their debut offering to the metal gods steeped in both mythology and true heavy metal. The powerful Images of Tyranny.

Opening with the deceptive Fed to the Lions that suddenly launches itself upon the listener, Carthus fuse progressive metal along with elements of death and thrash metal, plus huge doses of power, groove and good ole fashioned fist pumping metal.  The melodies are clean and instantly memorable, the production crisp allowing the twin guitar attack of Marko and Jimmy to create huge, at times galloping riffs along with some excellent shred and flamboyant solos. Swamp Monster is more than a mere nod to traditional metal, it revels in it, giving it that swagger that is most appreciated over a couple of ales on a seaward journey.  ‘’Nightmare’ takes the harmonic opening and throws you into some excellent double kick and blast work before another tasty solo launches out.

Filled with ambitious ideas, orchestrations, and pianos (the progressive “Ripples In Time”) on their journey from the catacombs, ‘’Blood Crown” is a gloriously heavy stomping moment, Abhi’s vocals are harsh yet always clear, ‘’Method In Madness”’ is more proof of their metal and their ability to utterly rock out when required in between some doom inspired sections and power metal signatures.

Self-described as death /folk Carthus create metaphor filled catchy as hell metal that is rich in the band’s storytelling. It is electric (eccentric) in its multiple personalities, yet it never loses focus of its groove and melody. It does bear some Viking-inspired metal moments that accentuate their storytelling and metal prowess. Their musical talent is beyond reproach and Images of Tyranny is a confident “Warborne’’ offering to the metal gods!
