Cobra Spell - Anthems Of The Night

Cobra Spell is a hard rock band from the Netherlands formed in 2019, featuring Crypta guitarist Sonia Anubis. The band has released two E.P.’s – ‘Love Venom’ (2020) and ‘Anthems Of The Night’ (2022). Cobra Spell‘s current line-up is vocalist Alexx Panza (Hitten), bass player Angelina Vehera, drummer Leonard Cakolli, guitarist Esmee Van Sinderen and (of course) Sonia.

The band’s new E.P. ‘Anthems Of The Night’ continues the rollercoaster of eighties/nineties glam and sleaze rock set by ‘Love Venom’ – taking you back to a golden era when bands such as Motley Crue, Cinderella, Ratt, and Skid Row ruled the roost. Well, now there’s a new band to rule that roost – Cobra Spell. With their new E.P. featuring four songs of old-school hard rock, you’ll be transported back in time to the glorious glory days of glam and sleaze rock. And I should know – because I was there, a live wire, nobody’s fool, a wanted man and definitely a youth gone wild!

But enough about my errant teenage years – Cobra Spell, and four new songs to review!

The opening song ‘Addicted To The Night’ is immediately into its stride, swinging home run riffs like a World Series batsman! The energy and oomph of ‘Addicted To The Night’ are top-notch, with its infectious rhythm keeping your head rocking back and forth from start to finish. What an absolutely blistering start. And what a wham bam thank you the eighties for breeding a brand of rock that is just fucking awesome – and still living today with bands such as Cobra Spell. Dropping a gear, ‘The Midnight Hour’ is a booming heavy foot-stomper that just screams “stadium rock”. Think Bon Jovi in the mid to late eighties and you’ll have some idea of the impact that ‘The Midnight Hour’ is making – the bouncy rhythm and the easily sing long-able chorus is the stuff to please a crowd.

Picking up the pace but losing none of the incredible infectious nature this E.P. has, the band power on with ‘Steal My Heart Away’. The sing-along ability is superb, Cobra Spell opting for an audience participation kind of vibe, for when ‘Steal My Heart Away’ is performed live, everyone will be singing along. And I mean everyone – from the bands fans old and new to the err, ahem, older rockers who lived and breathed the eighties and are now living and breathing the exact same atmosphere and aural pleasure as they did forty years ago – me included!

The final song ‘Accelerate’, is an up-tempo, energetic gallop of hard rock come heavy metal. With a more aggressive and gritty vocal performance coupled with the traditional “foot on the monitor” feel, Cobra Spell ends their new E.P. very much in the heavy metal territory.

Overall, four songs of highly infectious, punchy hard rock, full of energy and oomph.
