Dyssidia – Costly Signals (Album Review)

Dyssidia is a progressive metal band from Adelaide, South Australia. Costly Signals released on 27 March 2020, is the next album after the 2016 release, of delight and despair.

Costly Signals has everything a progressive metal fan wants to hear. It starts with some crushing power metal, fast double kicks, jaw crunching riffs, and savage growls, taking the listener into a dark landscape. This continues throughout the album while building on complex rhythms, drawing on emotions and blending different styles. That makes this album enjoyable to listen to.

Mitch’s vocals are a great fit, flexing his voice from growls to clean.

That’s up there with the best of the genre. Dimitri on keys supports the dark landscape while adding his own flair to some of the softer parts. Corey on guitar plays with such brutality and complexity where you will definitely have some favourite riffs and solos. And let’s not forget Neil on bass and Liam on drums they are really tight while driving the low end to different levels throughout.

With Liam’s fast hands and feet and complex beats and Neil’s driving baselines and mixing of styles, it is a great production.

I’m looking forward to seeing them live when gigs start up again. It will be a show not to miss, from a band that’s shared the stage with international acts like Opeth and Trivium, and great Aussie acts like Caligula’s Horse and Be’lakor. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more from Dyssidia and will be adding this album to my playlist.

So please stay safe, and enjoy some dark progressive metal from this great band.
