Rather than an album you listen to and enjoy objectively, Cult of Luna’s “The Long Road” is a spiritual journey, from which you can’t detach and assess based on objective criteria.
And I was surprised to get into it, as I usually judge an album from the most unbiased point of view that I can adapt, but this one hits you like a hypnotizing trip into the most reclused parts of your soul. The emphasis is therefore put on setting an atmosphere, through slowed-down riffs, melodious at times, heavy-hitting at others, but soothing and surprisingly calming.

The vocals sound like a desperate cry, raging from the bottom of the singer’s heart.
The songs are, for the most part, long and very progressive in the sense that you’re lost within the structures, lost in your thoughts, and they orient you, emotion after emotion, into various states of mind, and it’s so well done that you lose focus from technical matters such as the riff complexity, the tone, and the production. Nonetheless, when you’re back, in reality, the way these components are set fits perfectly with the album’s spirit.

This one was a very different listen from my usual rotation, yet it hit me as strongly as the songs on my favorite playlists, differently, but with the same intensity. If someone as passionate about strong brutal albums, with stomping riffs and face-melting breakdowns, enjoyed this release so much, then any metalhead out there would take this album as a delight.
