DEIMOS’ DAWN - Anthem Of The Lost

Deimos’ Dawn is a thrash metal band from Germany founded in 2017 by Andy Doe (guitar), Matze Lange (bass), and Mathias Schmidt (drums) – the band completed by former Morgoth singer Marc Grewe. The band’s debut album ‘Anthem Of The Lost’ was released in 2023…

…featuring twelve songs across aggression fuelled forty-five minutes! If you’re a fan of legendary thrash metal bands Kreator, Sepultura, Slayer, and Sodom – then Deimos’ Dawn is just the band for you! Album opener ‘Feeding The Decline’, is a sub-three minute tsunami of aggression – menacing vocals over a terrifying rhythm that smacks of devastation! Make no mistake, ‘Feeding The Decline’ is not for the faint of heart – and I imagine neither is the rest of the album! ‘Walking Out On You’ is a more melodic thrasher yet retains the menacing vocal stance, evoking a Slayer, Kreator kind of feel. The pace-changing attitude of ‘Walking Out On You’ is incredible. Deimos’ Dawn a devastating thunderbolt of thrash! However, the band mix an NWOBHM guitar sound with their thrash metal roots for the thundering ‘The Final Illusion’, a galloping furore of “foot on the monitor” metal. And while mostly thrash-based, the opening triple salvo will attract thrashers and traditional metallers.

Intensity and energy levels have been off the scale since the album began and with no sign of either lowering, the band roared on with the heavy-hitting ‘Over Your Dead Body’ – a thunderous thrash metal assault tickling the senses! It’s like the band are battering you with a baseball bat covered in thick feathers!

Chiming in at the most menacing feel the album has to offer so far, ‘Unholy Water’ has Megadeth’s aggression, Slayer’s bluntness, and the head-bang ability of early nineties Metallica. Deimos’ Dawn has certainly taken inspiration from some of the greatest thrash metal bands ever to grace the planet – and then added some! Some of their unique ingredient!

And here comes a song for all you BDSM fetishists – ‘Too Much Pain Is Not Enough’ features a more growled vocal performance alongside its brutal battering. The band are at their most devastating here, crushing skulls and breaking bones with ultimate ease.

And with a terrific play on words, Deimos’ Dawn launches headlong into the fast and furious ‘Deathstar Spangled Banner’. Pace and power combine with electric energy to send the speed meter into overdrive, the band displaying their fiercest attitude since the album began. The intensity is full on and in your face, never dropping since minute one song one – and shows no sign of abating either, ‘The 4th Wall’ picking up the baton and smacking you round the head with it! The menacing mid-tempo march of angry metal rises high as Deimos’ Dawn pummel, pushing the boundaries of brutality further than ever before. This is simply terrific stuff from a new band making an emphatic entry on to the thrash metal scene. And OMG – menace and reined-in aggression burst forth in the shape of the crawling ‘When In Doubt Kill!’. The slow and steady stomp is devastating, crushing everything in sight to leave only desolation in its wake.

Electrifying pace makes it presence felt with the barnstorming ‘Put Down That Weapon’ thrashing its way across the land, destroying anyone and anything foolish enough to stand in its way! The band haven’t missed a beat all album, keeping up an incredibly high-intensity level and a head bang ability second to none.

The NWOBHM guitar sound makes a reappearance with ‘Two Handed Game’ once more, stretching the boundaries of the band’s sonic remit! Attracting a wide range of fans, ‘Two Handed Game’ effortlessly straddles the border between two of the most significant musical genres of all time – thrash and traditional heavy metal! Clocking in at over six minutes in length, album closer ‘Terrorvision Quest’ is the longest song on offer by some margin – and is definitely worth waiting the whole album to hear. ‘Terrorvision Quest’ has it all – thunder, fire and brimstone, pace changes, menace, aggression and an unrelenting in your face attitude. What an album, and what a way to say hello to the world of thrash metal!

Overall, a thunderous album of aggression, brutality and menace, delivered at a pace with an incredible amount of energy.
