Descend into Despair – Opium (Album Review)

Opium by Descend into Despair is a monumental 59-minute Funeral Doom album featuring droning guitars and bass, brooding emphases drumming, and sorrow filled vocals. Descend into Despair are well known in the Romanian underground and notably features members of Clouds and Pantheist.

Dark ambience synth-wave featuring guest vocalist Tara Vanflower (Lycia) fades into ringing ambient doom, generating an ethereal sound which is carried throughout the Album by the guttural Funeral Doom vocals and droning guitars and bass.

Descend into Despair create an atmosphere drenching sound with long ringing bass and heavy punchy drums. Clean melancholic vocals, pining guitar rhythms induce a dream state element.

Opium is an impressibly well-composed album, I found moods that Descend into Despair craft are mournful and heartache inducing, yet stirs inspiration from pain, emphasising how distraught driven personal demons looking inward influence our very being.

I rate Opium by Descend into Despair 5 out of 5 roos, but instead of roos make it 5 bloody hearts as it creates an awe-inspiring ambience while ripping my beating heart out of my chest.
