Evadne – Dethroned Of Our Souls (Album Review)

Evadne - Dethroned Of Our Souls

When I was a kid, I remember watching that scene in ‘My Girl’, where Macaulay Calkin’s character, Thomas Sennett, was stung by bees and died after his allergies kicked in. We saw the aftermath in his quasi-girlfriend’s reaction (Vada Sultenfuss, played by Anna Chlumsky). That story was the saddest thing I have ever heard until I listened to Evadne’s latest release, Dethroned Of Our Souls. Some of the words that I listed in my Word doc when reviewing this piece were slow, haunting, black, alone, and a sense of deep dark dread.

Let’s get to the point though. This release is very strong. The songs are epic and different from each other that is requires an album-length release (which is not always the case when it comes to this genre of metal).

The guitars are subtle, as are the drums, and some of the sections could be confused for a legitimate ballad. The piano section in Colossal very reminiscent of Thomas Newman’s work (and if you don’t know who that is, look him up you uncultured swine!). The female vocals are quite haunting, but my favourite voice is the clean singing male voice. It has such power and a genuine feel to it. I must say, and this is more my problem rather than something with band, the main voice I’m struggling with; not enough distortion or wholeness to it. But I do know people who would love it. It’s a great effort and worth checking out. Suitable for those who walk the beach during the winter months.
