Subliritum – Downfall (Album Review)

Subliritum - Downfall

Subliritum hail from the North in Trondheim, Norway. Subliritum began their quest in 1998 and have released two full-length albums “Dark Prophecies” (2001) and after a lineup change “A Touch of Death” (2011) which were both held in high regard. Thebon and Vyl from Keep of Kalessin fame have both played with Subliritum.

Subliritum has just released their third album “Downfall” which has been described as their strongest album yet, reviving the spirit of Norwegian Black Metal. Subliritum is fast, brutal and for any fan of brutality, this is definitely an album for you. A black metal band from Norway sounds like a bit of a cliche but Subliritum is nowhere near a cliche as the album shows that the band has a deep love for the genre and also incorporates their own style of heaviness.

The album shows a lot of talented musicianship with tight and fast drumming, soloing, and fills and licks that are so quick you may not even hear it. One of the most impressive things in the album is the tremolo picking as not only is it at a high quality but the tunes and tones that come along with it are most impressive.

The album does have different time changes it is not just blasting beats and fast guitars and screeching vocals, it is very well written and played, the album is also very well produced. There are a lot of thrash elements and also some death elements, and in one of the tracks is a small choir.

Stand-out tracks on the album would be “Downfall of Empathy” it’s quick and diverse and will get your head banging, this track also has a guest vocalist from “King Baltak” whose voice can only be described as intense. “Dirth and Stone” Has a big thrash influence towards the end and once again shows time changes and high-quality guitar work. The final track “De Mektige Haller” is a great track to end the album with a classic black metal intro with a wave of brutality to follow, this is another track that shows the great tunes they play with the tremolo picking.

A great release from Subliritum, this album will definitely be ringing in your ears after you listen to it.
