Right off the bat, there are two things that strike you about Sydney based thrash band Head In A Jar’s 2013 release Downtown Meltdown: The first thing being the artwork on the cover – very much along the lines of Richmond Virginia’s Municipal Waste, the second thing that strikes you is that for a self-released album, the production is great with every element given a time and place to shine. If you are looking for a heavy/serious thrash album then this is not for you.
This is a much more tongue-in-cheek approach to the overall sound and vibe of the album.

“Nuclear Strike On Vatican” is a perfect example of this. The vocals on this album remind me of a fast-paced Neil Turbin show.

Casing great bass sound and drumming is the track “Genocide City” with some intricate time signatures and sound. The track “More Machine Then Man” is an insane little track that has some great guitar shredding and really amps up the fun factor. “Carnivorous” has a quirky intro that throws the album off into another direction which is both unexpected and welcomed. The album is fairly relentless in its overall pace. The last track “Thrashasurus Rex” is a perfect closer for an album that will leave you wanting more live.
The band’s 2012 Atomic Circus and 2012 Re-Animated At Venom live album are also worth a listen. This new album makes for something different and exciting to add to your CD collection and I am looking forward to the next release.
