Dust & Bones‘ album, “Mission Back to the Forbidden,” is by all means an acquired taste. The album starts with a rather confusing instrumental – the listener is certain not to anticipate the overall direction of the album. Track 2 – “UR R’N’R” – is bare bones rock n roll accompanied with parodied death metal vocals. Track 3 – “Move” – continues in this direction, although the vocals do improve. However, the production is beyond lacklustre and leaves much to be desired. The vocals are dry and thin, the bass is scarcely present, and the guitars are fuzzed out in a very unpleasant and synthetic way. The album continues in this direction with tracks like “Remedy,” “Feel Good,” and “Electricity.” There are certainly great riffs and decent playing throughout the band’s repertoire – however, the parody is incredibly thick and makes the album nearly unlistenable. For this reason, I would suggest listening if you enjoy this sort of parody in metal music. Otherwise, this album will serve only as an incredibly frustrating listen.
