Good Things Festival returned to Sydney in 2023, and it was nothing short of spectacular. With Good Things Sydney marking this reviewer’s fourth festival for this year, attending this year’s event was an absolute treat for the senses. From the diverse line-up to the seamless organization, Good Things Festival once again proved itself as a must-attend on the Australian music festival calendar.
With the festival returning to Centennial Park, it offered a familiar space, with a lot of transport improvements seen such as road closures around as well as signage to better direct attendees to the transport options available. Navigating from one stage to another was a breeze, allowing attendees to catch their favourite acts without missing a beat. The vibrant atmosphere created by passionate music lovers added to the overall positive energy of the event.
One of the standout features of Good Things Festival is its commitment to diversity in music genres. The line-up boasted an impressive array of artists, catering to a wide range of tastes. From the dark metal tones of Behemoth to the classic punk-rock of Pennywise, the Aussie old school Boom Crash Opera and 40th anniversary celebrators Devo, there was something for everyone. This inclusivity added a layer of excitement, as attendees had the chance to discover new and emerging artists like Melbourne locals Tapestry, alongside established favourites like Limp Bizkit.
The day started out with the unfortunate news that PVRIS had to pull out which left the main stage without an opening act, but the festival still kicked off with a bang with The Plot In You opening Stage 4 to a roaring crowd and more crowd surfers than I’ve seen in a while.
Stand Atlantic started immediately after on Stage 3 and left the crowd screaming for more with their infectious energy and sky-climbing pole artists tantalising the crowd.
Next on Stage 4 were those Russian deathcore gods Slaughter to Prevail absolutely annihilating the throngs of fans there to see if Alex Terrible really was as beastly as he sounds in recordings. He. Did. Not. Disappoint. I am still in shock over his vocal range, make sure to check out the Reel we captured of his acapella moment during VIKING that shook me to my bones.
Japanese first-timers HANABIE showed they are a force to be reckoned with. Do not be fooled by their diminutive statures and Harajuku-esque outfits, they are absolute powerhouses with some amazing talent.
We took a small breather to sit down in the shade with some drinks and dumplings and got to catch some of the more well-known tracks from Sepultura which just made me want to see them again.
Corey Taylor brought his addictive energy to the main stages and entertained us with a blend of his solo material, classic bangers from Slipknot, melodic beauties from Stone Sour, and his always amazing rendition of the SpongeBob theme song.
Limp Bizkit graced the main stage and played banger after banger, making me realise I knew a hell of lot more songs than I thought I did. Fred worked the crowd, playing with our emotions and energy until we were all putty in his hands.
The evening ended up coming to a close a lot sooner than anyone had wanted, with the festival needing to be called off early by SES and NSW Police due to an incoming electrical storm with hail on its way and the safety of everyone in attendance being the most important thing. Devastating as it was for Fall Out Boy to be cut off 3 songs into what was looking to be an epic set, they did announce this morning they are trying to get something together to make it up to us. Stay tuned, ya girl just may be able to scream her teenage heart out again sooner rather than later.
Beyond the music, Good Things Festival curated a delightful selection of food and beverage options. It was obvious the festival listened to the feedback from last year and there were a lot more trucks offering more to avoid getting stuck in hour long lines just to get something to eat. This year also saw them include a lot more options for those with dietary requirements and allergies. New spaces like Stage 666 being completely under cover with additional seating, as well as the Jack Daniel’s bar offering more spaces for attendees to be able to meet up and get out of the sun and rest up before their next venture into the pits.
To cap this off, Good Things Festival Sydney 2023 was a resounding success. The stellar line-up, seamless organization, and vibrant atmosphere created an unforgettable day of music and camaraderie. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of a specific genre or a casual music lover looking for a memorable experience, Good Things Festival is undoubtedly a highlight on the Australian festival circuit. Here’s to more years of outstanding music and unforgettable moments at Good Things Festival!
