After a wild year so far for Perth prog legends Voyager, it was a huge welcome home party on Saturday night for the band that made a huge splash at Eurovision, something many of us would of never expected to see for a Perth band, let along a metal band. Much deserved though and the upgrade to Magnet House which also sold out made the home town show that much sweeter.
Opening the show tonight is Perth metal veterans Psychonaut who also go way back with Voyager in the Perth scene. Bringing a real party vibe to the place early on, the band sounded electrifying tonight taking advantage of the extra room on stage and bigger sound coming through the massive room that by this point was already filling to capacity. The bands uncanny knack for their tongue in cheek personality and wacky sensabilities with their music as well as their on stage banter is always a joy to watch and the few in the crowd who hadn’t seen them before were in for a real treat tonight. Tonight’s performance was one of their best yet, great start to the night.
Voyager were quick to follow right after which was great as everyone seemed pretty keen to see the prog masters bring it and boy did they deliver! Hyperventilating was seen early and Colours was a real highlight, the glittery outfits shining bright as the band tore through a set of favorites and classics. The epic Brightstar with the huge proggy breakdown midway was brilliant and the classic The Meaning Of I is always fun to see, the band were clearly having fun while being on point as always. Their sound is consistently impeccable too which has always been one of the trademarks of the band, powerful and gigantic while being clean and crystal clear.
The cha cha cha bit was of course fun to watch and in typical Voyager fashion, plays into that real fun character the band are known for with their numerous nods to a lot of fun musical moments. White Shadow was a nice closing number and just like that it was all over! The atmosphere tonight was tremendous, it was a real party and a great way to bring Voyager back home after a whirlwind trip. With a new album out next month, things continue to grow to next level status and deservingly so.
