Green Lung – Black Harvest (Album Review)

I was first introduced to Green Lung about 6 months ago by a friend who played me “Woodland Rites” on vinyl. It resonated with me instantly as a fan of bands such as Black Widow and Uriah Heep.

The 70s-Esque heaviness of the riffs, the mesmerising melodies and the distinctive vocal style and lyrics were intriguing.

So when I had the opportunity to review the new album “Black Harvest” due for release on 22 October 2021, I was excited to hear the band’s latest offering. I was not prepared for how much I would love it!

The intro track “The Harrowing” is ritualistic, it begins with a vocal that stops you in your tracks, then builds into organ-driven heaviness, it gives you just enough to know something exceptional is imminent.

Then you are hit bang in the face with the explosion of a heavy, bluesy riff that is “Old Gods”. This track has an unmistakable hook, some cleverly timed stops, drum rolls and vocals that soar above the music in a mix that compliments every single element.

The whole album is filled with an abundance of influences, giving me all the feel of a band that puts their entire soul into the music. The lyrics tell stories, the vocals emphasise the narrative beautifully, softer and melodic in parts and elevating in others, to take you on an uplifting and spellbinding journey. Each instrument and musician shines in their own right throughout the album, which adds to the essence of the music.

I could write about every song in detail and it still wouldn’t give justice to the layers of feeling intertwined in the album that had me captivated.

A couple of the standout tracks for me were “Reaper’s Scythe”, with such a cool heavy riff, with thundering rhythms, with a catchy chorus and “Graveyard Sun” with its beautiful melodies, ebbing and flowing in its intensity, with fascinating lyrics, it is phenomenal.
Green Lung are weavers of magical music, conjuring not just music, but providing an ethereal experience. This album is refreshingly unique in a time where we are bombarded with a multitude of new releases, it is definitely in my top 10 albums of 2021.
