Claret Ash – Ground Dweller (Album Review)

Claret Ash - Ground Dweller

Claret Ash is a Black Metal band based out of Canberra. They are unique in the fact that there aren’t many black metal bands in Australia. Maybe our lifestyle doesn’t really portray the evil and hatred of the Norwegian black metal scene, maybe we get more sun than they do or we’re too laid back. I don’t know.

Ground Dweller shows some really great elements to their music. Three of the tracks produced are over 9 mins in length, painting a musical picture. I can visualize what Claret Ash is trying to achieve but I think it could have been done quicker.

In saying the above, the track “The Fallen” is vicious with melodic elements, clean guitars, then ferociously taking you back into the darkness.

In between the tracks are musical interludes which are hypnotic in their simplicity but create the setup for the next story of musical mayhem.

Claret Ash is talented in what they do and would be unique to see, although they remind me of Alchemist in their approach. They would be a great live band if they could present a visual alongside their music.

The cover of Ground Dweller wasn’t that imaginative or appealing and apart from their logo, would not pick them to be a black metal band’s cover at all. Could this be detrimental? Only time will tell I guess.

In February of this year, they supported Septicflesh in Japan, so they can play, but I wasn’t that impressed with what was on offer.

The talent is there but for me, it missed the mark. However, I believe they have more in store for them and wish them all the best.
