Siv – Heretic (EP Review)

Siv

I fucking love debut Eps. I fucking love them. Ballina’s Siv has kept that feeling alive for me with their debut release of Heretic. Open up the case and before you can even get the CD into the player a nice little business card sits there staring at you with a title of NO BULLSHIT METAL FROM THE NORTHERN RIVERS OF NSW. There you go review done. No bullshit metal and that is exactly what you get.

This thing is heavy. It’s a 6 track beast with songs titled Heretic, Hiding Behind the Cross, Empty, You Have Failed Me and as a little bonus two demos– The World Will Burn and Slave to The Grave. After the intro build-up, you are greeted by David Curtis’ harrowing voice. ALL. I. NEED. IS. HERESY.HERSEY. BLASPHEMY AND HERESY. COME ON! Next, you simply headbang to the groove and awesome guitar versus drum battle– all this in the first minute? Bargain!

Their sound is dirty, ugly, in ya face, no messing around noise with plenty of Static X style riffage blended in with some old school death & thrash metal. They have a simple yet effective approach to their songwriting and they don’t try to be over the top or too technical which only adds to the success of their first Ep. Like they say– No bullshit!

The music is very aggressive as are the lyrics and with the track “Hiding Behind the Cross” it’s easy to see where they get their inspiration from.

I had the honor of sitting in on one of Siv’s rehearsals at their studio and I kid you not I stayed for the entire 2 hours because when you’re up that close with the band you really appreciate the passion they have for their own brand of metal. Add to this they have a new drummer in Mr. Arlo Ball and when you see them playing live you are going to have your socks blown off!

Besides the heavy riff happy structure of each track the one thing that stuck in my head was the demonic sound of the front man’s voice. Turn “Heretic” up at church on Sunday and you will probably convert the Lord Jesus into a devil-worshiping metal monster!
Like all good metal, Heretic is best played loud. For a debut Ep, Siv has created a solid base on which they can either build upon or continue with but for now, don’t miss the opportunity to see them live and loud! Buy Heretic and help support a monster that might just take the Northern Rivers by storm.
