INNASANATORIUM - Odyssey of the Mind

Innasantorium’s album Odyssey of the Mind is one of those albums that may not sink in straight away. A solid listen on the first go, the genius and talent of the band may not be fully appreciated until it is given a solid spin.

It does sound a little eclectic at the start with what can be described as an ambient but full piano intro track that quickly jumps into a spoken word section. The spoken word introduces the track Show Me Your Scars and this is where the album really begins. The guitar is clean, the rhythm section is solid and the opening growls do let the listener know which direction this album can go into. Singer Adam McDonald does have a very soulful voice and it really does tie the tracks together.

There is something for most metal fans on this album and while it is not reinventing the wheel in terms of sound, there are quite a few riffs throughout the album that become quite addictive.

Basically, if you like guitar solos, heavy and fast drumming, solid and rhythmic basslines and a skilled mix of harsh and clean vocals- then this album will be enjoyable listen to.

From the heaviness of tracks like Accelerated Oblivion to even a cover of Silverchair’s Freak to round out the album, what is evident is that Innasantorium has a lot of ideas and influences when it comes to its music. It is easy to hear influences from across the metal spectrum with black metal-sounding blast beats, the riffs ever popular in death metal and even gang vocals that are reminiscent of metalcore/hardcore style bands.

Honestly, these are the kind of tracks that are great to listen to at home but would really come to life if you saw them performed live.

Stand-out tracks are of course #scottyfrommarketing, a very catchy and fun dig at Australia’s former PM, and The Desire has an opening riff that will get stuck in your head for days. If you are a fan of bands like Trivium, Machine Head or even Slayer, Cannibal Corpse and possibly Sepultura– give this album a spin.
