Kalidia – Lies’ Device (Album Review)

Italian-born Kalidia spawned this world in 2010 and have brought their own piece of power/symphonic metal with them. Kalidia have have shared the stage with some talented musicians in the power metal world such as Fabio Lione of Rhapsody of Fire and Olaf Thorsen from Vision Divine and Labyrinth just to name a few. They released their 4 track EP “Dance of the four winds” in 2012, and their debut album “Lies Device” in 2014.

Lies Device is an album that is different to most power metal albums I have heard. Whilst being a good album, it shares different tempos – and not just quick drums, guitar, keyboards, and a big vocalist. There are some quick songs as well as some slower ballads with some effective keyboard sounds which give the album extra moods within the music and are not overshadowing the rest of the music. Nicoletta Rosellini has some powerful vocals and she utilities her range well; I believe she will have an even more powerful impact in their next release. Guitars with hard-hitting chords and riffs with some excellent solos. Well-played drums and bass bring it all together.

Unfortunately, there are some moments in this album that I could not pass… no matter how many times I listened to it. I found couple of the songs to be quite repetitive which did not flow well with the album. And I also found the male vocal in the chorus of “Harbinger of Serenity” to be not suited with Nicoletta; it would have sounded better sung clean and not dirty – though his vocals before the chorus are very good. I feel as though these are the only things that let this album down. But do not let this turn you away from it as its a very good album with a lot of different tempos and moods.

I am a sucker for a good ballad and “Shadow will be gone” is such a good ballad with some excellent vocals and emotional guitars to support those vocals. Amazing! And that solo in the song was very well written and executed.

The Lost Mariner“, the opening track of album, was played well and a good one to start. But my favorite is the title song “Lies Device“; the opening riff will draw you in straight away. Some excellent tones from the keyboard gives it an extra kick. Excellent drumming in this song. This song is Nicoletta’s greatest performance and it’s the song where she really shines as a vocalist – she stays in her range and she executes her voice with emotion and greatness.

This overall is a very well-written and well-played album with only a couple of hiccups. Being their debut album, it’s a very strong debut and I am very much looking forward to their next release as I am expecting it to be even more powerful than ‘Lies Device. Expect big things from these guys; they do have a lot to offer!
