Lordi – Lordiversity (7 Album Boxset Review)

Lordi is a Finnish rock band that was formed in 1992 by the lead singer and costume designer, Tomi Petteri Putaansuu, better known as Mr Lordi.  The band won the Eurovision song contest in 2006 with their song “Hard Rock Hallelujah”Lordi is well known for its live performances with elaborate costumes and pyrotechnics.  They have ten previously released albums,  the latest of these being in 2020, which brings us to the monster that is “Lordiversity”.  Seven albums in total, all to be released on 26th November 2021.  It is certainly a lot to digest, and a daunting task to write about each album in detail.

  So I will summarise…

Each album has its own individuality, with clear genre influences that stand out.

Skeletric Dinosaur has very Kiss-inspired vibes.  Mr. Lordi’s vocals are reminiscent of Gene Simmons and the songs have that big stage show rock vibe that is synonymous with Kiss.  In fact, Mr. Lordi is quoted as saying Lordi would likely not exist if it wasn’t for the influence of Kiss.

“Superflytrap” is a funky disco-style album, with some very amusing lyrics with an overtone of sleaze (in a good way!).  “Bella from Hell” is without a doubt a 70’s disco, it kind of reminded me of a cheesy TV show theme, a flashback to childhood for sure.  This album did start to blend together a bit for me, so only the one track really got my attention.

“The Master Beast from the Moon” is a shift in style again, much more melodic, and although the vocals still have the usual grit, there is definitely a more tuneful aspect.  I enjoyed “Yo-Haee-Von”, a wonderful melody with piano and choir.  It was a pleasant change in pace at the third album mark on this epic task.  Not a bad album, a little more laid back than the rest.

“Abusement Park” provides more upbeat heavier riffs and memorable guitar work.  The choruses are catchy.  “Pinball Machine” gives you a small glimpse of Mr. Lordi‘s vocal repertoire with a few nicely timed screams and the riff in “Roller Coaster” is driving and heavy.  This album sits at number two out of the set for me.

“Humanimals” gives you 80’s pop/rock with much more prominent keyboards and melodic choruses, it’s not as heavy, and the tempos and choruses contain more melody and backing vocals, one for fans of 80’s mainstream rock for sure.

“Abracadaver” – Well this one is more to my taste!  My heavy metal senses were delighted.  Furious riffs and vocal screams start the album and it’s great!  “Devilium” is one hell of a song!  It is the standout track for me from all the albums.  This album has a distinctly heavy metal flavor where you experience influences from Black Sabbath to Slayer.  Definitely my pick for the top album out of the seven.

Spooky Sextravaganza” has a multitude of sound bites and changes within the songs that is sometimes puzzling but interesting.  It’s a really fun listen, it feels like the love child of Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie.

If you are already a fan of Lordi, then this seven-album set is a “must-have” purchase.  It offers something for everyone.  Whether you’re a rock fan or a metalhead, or both, there is sure to be a lot within these albums that will appeal to you.  I tip my hat to Lordi for such a mammoth effort in releasing this amount of music and being able to provide a broad range of styles while still maintaining their integral sound.
