Lycanthrope – Hydra (EP Review)

Lycanthrope - Hydra

The beast has arisen with this multi-pronged attack of music. Newcastle-based Lycanthrope has brought out their 4 song EP, “Hydra”. After listening to it all you will likely wind up running around in your hirsute suit howling at the moon.

In the opening song, crushing guitar and drum blasts come through like large artillery gunfire explosions in a movie about the world war. Vocals then kick in to tell us “our world is full of lies ” and these guys carry enough angst to tell us about it. This song initially has the combo of a Slipknot x Twelve Foot Ninja song before the vocals break out like a hydra bursting from a cloud of toxic grey-looking fumes to be realised as another beast entirely.

“The Human Virus” follows a similar style to the first song with a variation on gripping drum/guitar intro before the drums take on a new bout of life with their frenzied action.

“Move Mountains” takes you on a more melodic journey bringing some emotion to the hard rhythms surrounding it. You can’t help but clasp your hands tight and sing along to the unknowing ether before you. Because the catchphrase is quite catchy and sung repetitively, this could take away from the effect it has, wanting more variation.

“Senses Betrayed” just kicks right in with all-out chaos. It’s a turbulent affair to start before it begins to settle down into a rhythm. We have an added element to the vocals, with his tone being downplayed somewhat and dragging the ‘vocal kite’ on the ground rather than letting it fly. This adds a refreshing element to it and makes bursts of soaring vocals more impressive.

Lead guitar generally hides in the background. In “Senses Betrayed” we have them piping more giving more layers to the song. Most times, though, it flies around, leaving traces of sparks in the Sonisphere.

How impressive is the beast in the cover? Without anything in it to compare this beast’s size, we get the impression that it’s a power to be respected. In mythology, the hydra has one immortal head, while the others are fair game. Not much would be left of anyone trying to figure out which one of them was the odd one out and deal with it as Heracles did. Eery shades of grey and black are combined strikingly well to portray this horrendous beast.

This is an energetic piece that will engage their fans and entice new ones as their rhythm gets you in sync with theirs before the hydra catches you.
