These are the things that come to mind when listening to Magg Dylan’s release Amethyst. There’s a bit of a fine line with this album in that many people won’t see it as metal. This fine line was drawn between Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath spoke about the evil side of the world and Zepplin didn’t. For a listener to likes a variety of music (such as myself), distorted guitars, the very occasional distorted scream and the odd killer drum roll doesn’t cut it in the genre of metal. The bulk majority of this album could have been released by any pop-rock outfit, but that isn’t a bad thing; it just makes it a bit different to what people might expect. Take off your Kult metal hat my friend, and embrace the nuance of the music.
The production of this release is exceptional. There are shades and colour in the general feel of the music as well as the vocal performance. The topics tend to be dark but still presented in an almost radio-friendly, easily digestible format.
