Nothgard – Malady X (Album Review)

There aren’t many heavy metal albums that you listen to that automatically become ‘classic’. I’m not sure what it is, but there is a feeling of timelessness to these albums.

You’ll never remember when they were made or who showed them to you, but they burrow a special place in your heart – kind of link ringworm but less evasive. This is the case for Nothgard’s latest release, Malady X. The melodies and musicianship in this album are fantastic. I love the off-beat stuff dispersed with the more rocky, groove sections.

There are plenty of reasons why this German band would be awesome live. The vocals are brutal yet still distinguishable, perfect for this style of melodic metal.

But it is the epic feel of Malady X that gives it its strongest charm. The tracks are damn solid and the industrial elements, while minor, add intrigue to the mix. While there is an element of a commercial feel to some of the sections, this release doesn’t lose its place in melodic metal. If anything, these sections may provide a great gateway for people wishing to get into the genre.

The production is solid, but if I am to gripe, (and this is a small gripe), it is one area I’d like to see an injection of sorts; mainly around the strings and additional elements. This release in one word could only be described as ‘accomplished’. Suitable for people who wish to know what it is linked to live in an endless European winter.
