Malignant Aura - Abysmal Misfortune Is Draped Upon Me

Abysmal Misfortune Is Draped Upon Me is the upcoming debut album by Malignant Aura, due for release on May 30 on Bitter Loss Records. Abysmal Misfortune Is Draped Upon Me would be a great release for a well-established band, as a debut album it’s outstanding. I am blown away by the band’s talent and song-writing ability. These guys know how to do atmospheric music – from start, to finish the album is incredibly deep and dark.

The album commences with Malignant Aura which is a perfected mash of doom and all-class black metal. It works on so many levels. The steady drumbeat working its way through the song really holds it all together, so that despite being somewhat progressive in sound it still feels like the same song throughout. Please do yourself a favor and check out the single – you’ll know what I mean.

Following on, we have A Timeless Place Beneath The Earth which has an incredible intro section. The flow from the previous track to this song works well. I’m a massive fan of bands who take the time to ensure tracks flow, and they’ve done this well through the album’s entirety.

I loved the distinct change in beat at 2:45 – a nice touch that had me headbanging. Again, this is a band that experiments with different sounds, changes in pitch, and rhythm.

There Is Blackness In The Water continues the run of killer intros. I’d call this a “slow headbang” track, but there’s also a complexity to the song with many parts. While the album consists of six songs only, each song has a bunch of different parts to them making the album feel as though there are many more than 6 songs.

You’ll never get bored listening to Abysmal Misfortune Is Draped Upon Me. There Is Blackness In The Water is the stand-out track for me. It’s a long song at 12 minutes, but oh so good.

Abysmal Misfortune Is Draped Upon Me, which is the title track, has this low-down dirty sound that I really dig. Soliloquy Beneath The Sepulchre is slow and super atmospheric – it feels to me like I’m attending a funeral when I listen… That’s good in this context! Like I’ve said, these guys know how to do atmospheric. Finally …And So It Was That I Lay Down Forever closes out a brilliant album. This is another killer song that is a great finisher for the album. It’s fast compared to the rest of the album and will be a popular song amongst those like-minded metalheads. A great closer.

What can I say? I can’t believe this is a debut album because it’s so fucking good. My god, these guys have a bright future ahead of them… or rather, a bleak future is more appropriate! I’m looking forward to a tour in support of their debut album. The crowds will lap up this monstrously atmospheric sound! Great stuff!
