Obsidian Monolith – Manifest (Album Review)

Obsidian Monolith - Manifest

Obsidian Monolith continues their emotional onslaught with their 2019 release Manifest. After reviewing their EP last year, I couldn’t wait to see what these guys were going to come out with – and I’m not disappointed.

Beautifully tragic and uncompromisingly heavy, Manifest flies the Australian melodic flag with precision and care.

Axel’s voice, reminiscent of Insomnium’s Sevänen, drives the heaviness of the record, while Maurizio continues his melodic pilgrimage into a truth of the dark realities of life. The writing of the tracks is excellent. They’re well structured and tread that line between the Scandinavian melodic metal giants and Aussie death metal. The songs showcase similar emotions to their 2018 EP, but continue to elaborate. I am especially a fan of the interludes and additional elements that help this album to breathe.

The drum choices help to compliment the songs and add a sense of urgency when needed.

My only gripe for this album would be the production quality. There is a need here for a producer to push these guys out of their comfort zone and polish some of the rough edges of the record. While the writing of the album is powerful, a recording producer would give these guys the edge they’re probably looking for.

Suitable for those still grappling with that nihilistic view.
