Mutant Blast – Detonation (EP Review)

When the guitar crunch kicks in then you know this band has a sound that they have cultivated to become strong enough to bowl anyone over.  Aptly described as a “metallic death ‘n’ roll band ” this Finnish band released their EP “Detonation” in September 2021.

After solidifying their line-up in August 2020, they rehearsed intensively before entering the studio early in 2021 to record the songs. Now they have “Detonation” EP to belch out through those little white jobs sticking out your ears.

The beasts that make up the band are Tomi Malinen (lead vocalist and guitarist), Toni Huhtiniemi (guitarist),  Juha Lähde (bassist ), and E-S Kuikka (the big noise making apparatus banged with sticks).

A 6-track EP with the first track being an hors d’ouvre for the full-length songs to chase its heels. The rest of the album sounds like the engine starting of an 18 wheeler before being cut through with an angle grinder. Their sound is coarse and full-bodied that is invigorating and fresh.

Heavy metal vocals provide the layer on top. With a song like “Blades of Steel,” they embraced the heavy metal side of music while a constant explosion of music behind them provides the melodic industrial metal aspect. Without limiting themselves they have several styles of metal blended into the mix.

Guitars predominate with the primary sound and then some guitar solos that thrash around like the tentacles of a venomous octopus with you in its grasp. The drums are synergistically energetic providing vigor and ensuring the songs keep up their brutality.

Their album cover has a comical and colorful of way shouting an FU to anyone they feel deserves it. They are bold in what they are and couldn’t care less what you thought. If that attitude is transcribed to their live shows it’ll be worth watching.

“Blades of Steel” has a more traditional heavy metal vibe and “Break the wheel” incorporates a thrash metal vibe. After the onslaught, we start off with “Grave Insanity” with some ominous guitar tones to slow things down and build tension. Within this song we have a band focused on delivering a more intense and passion-filled piece of art with some melodic guitar areas and solos.

“March of the Dead” has more of that gripping guitar sound they have followed by “Death Ray” to top it off with another intense composition to fuel your day.

Some of the pictures of the band are taken with them surrounded by snow. Any houses playing this aloud won’t have any snow on their rooves as the walls would shake and the snow would topple off its resting place.
