Nexus 7.17 – Hybrid Generation (EP Review)

Nexus 7.17, as unique as its name, is the band’s music. How rarely do you find, not only in Morocco but generally in the modern metal international scene a band with so many eclectic influences and a blend of genres which led the members to label themselves “Modern Industrial/ Futuristic Metal”.

Indeed, throughout listening to the EP, a lot of atmospheres are communicated, you can sense old school influences in the opening track, as well as some groovy riffs disseminated throughout the album which ascertains of the metal influence of the members, and the diversity of it, as you can hear riffs ranging from thrash influences to black metal riffs, passing by death metal roots. What is also clearly felt are the non-metal influences injected into the album.

Overall, this is a very innovative approach to writing an EP, one I do not necessarily adhere to, but what I believe is that experimentations like these have to be done for the sake of pushing metal forwards, and I’m proud that such experiments are emerging from the Moroccan scene. Now an approach like this one will surely please modern metal fans as innovation is always researched in these subgenres, but to me, it lacks that violence and brute force that should be inherent to a metal release. Also, the EP falls into the trap of modern metal composition gimmicks which have been overdone.

The production is clean and well balanced, the guitar tones sound decent, and the drums are well mixed, but the bass could be more emphasized to give more punch and aggression to the release.

It’s an interesting debut release in the sense that it leaves you wondering what’s coming next.
