On Atlas' Shoulders - Aion

German heavy metal band On Atlas’ Shoulders are back and better than ever with their new album Aion!

Kicking off strong with the title track, at a whopping 7:34, the ignition countdown blends seamlessly into a powerful track, operatic style vocals contrasting with the space station announcements to introduce the album with style. Gunslingers is deliciously heavy from the get go, chugging guitar riffs and deep vocals creating a track reminiscent of a Powerwolf album, the pauses in the middle are an extremely effective addition before the solo. Swallow The Sun contains all the classic heavy metal energy, the drums are especially strong throughout the track, easily carrying the intensity of the track between crashing symbols and pounding double kicks, the chorus is particularly catchy also.

Gears Of Life is another track that the double kick takes the forefront in again, the guitar compliments it well with harsh riffs laced with a slightly melodic edge that really comes out to play in the latter half of the album, dancing in and out of powerful vocal dips. Wings Of Icarus adds a nice break in the middle of the heaviness, still very much noticeable as them but branching out a little, allowing the band to show their range with a classic power metal energy to it, it’s a strong addition. Starfall has a sadder element to the lyrics, “how can a star look so beautiful in its dying moments” emphasising the space theme promised in the album and the deep bass combined with the slower guitar sections adds a ballad-esque vibe to parts of the song.

Titanium takes the storytelling in another direction, truly a showcase of the guitarists shredding abilities, the lyrics talk of unshakable strength, the layered shouting backing vocals a great addition to counteract the higher vocal runs from Marius. Rise Above is a great track full of squealing solos and heavy riffs, the operatic vocals keep the song soaring. Closing out the album is Northern Lights, jam packed with that 80s style power sure to get your head nodding, a great end to a great album!

Overall, Aion is an awesome album making On Atlas’ Shoulders one to watch for all heavy metal fans!
