The band was formed in 2008 and is composed of members Chris Themelco (vocals and lead guitar), Luke Ashley (guitar), Keswick Gallagher (keyboards and backing vocals), Leon Monaco (bass), and Matt Themelco (drums). I’m going to call it and say that Orpheus Omega is the most fun metal band in Australia right now.
For the Portraits EP, each song was written by a different member of the band, and all bar one of the tracks include guest contributions. These guest contributions add an extra layer of depth and complexity to the EP and highlight the band’s ability to collaborate with other talented musicians. The cameo performances on the EP are a testament to the respect and admiration Orpheus Omega have within the metal community.
The EP begins with Within These Walls, which features the supremely talented Andy Gillion, a heavy and atmospheric track that sets the tone for what’s to come. The song features a perfect balance of clean vocals and harsh growls, with intricate guitar riffs and powerful drumming driving the melody forward.
Next up is Edge of Forever, which is a standout track featuring none other than Jim Grey from Caligula’s Horse that highlights the band’s versatility and skill. The song features a memorable chorus, soaring guitar solos, and an anthemic energy that’s sure to get listeners pumped up.
The third track is O, Dissimilate Destruct and nowhere does the band demonstrate their depth of talent than through this offering. Such incredible depth and feeling – I don’t think I’m overselling it to say that this is masterful songwriting and quite different from the Orpheus Omega I’m used to. A total surprise, but it just works.
The EP’s penultimate track, The Prophecy, features both Jukka and Markus of Omnium Gatherum, and is a heavy and powerful song that features some of the band’s most aggressive and intense moments. The track showcases the band’s incredible musicianship, with tight drumming, intricate guitar riffs, and thunderous bass lines all coming together to create a thrilling listening experience.
The EP comes to a close with Exist to Observe, which features Bjorn Strid of Soilwork. This is a beautiful and contemplative track that’s sure to leave a lasting impression on listeners. The song features some of the EP’s most memorable guitar work, with haunting melodies and intricate solos that create an ethereal atmosphere.
