Deicide – Overtures of Blasphemy (Album Review)

Deicide is a band that have never strayed from the death metal genre. Their new album Overtures of Blasphemies is a true testament to that fact. Opener One with Satan tells the story of what the album is about: Satanic death metal, Deicide’s forte.

The music is brutal, and the production value is pretty good, but that’s really where it stops for me. Even though I love Deicide, the songs sound very repetitive and the soloing seems to lack the blistering intent of previous albums. Even Glen’s vocal delivery seems to be one dimensional. It’s gruff and gravelly as usual but missing some of the punch of Kill the Christians or Dead by Dawn. Even the high-pitched and dare I say…

melodic style we received on Once Upon the Cross isn’t here. The closest Overtures of Blasphemies get to my Deicide is with Seal the Tomb Below.

I’m not sure hardships the band went into making Overtures of Blasphemies, but I really found it lacking in imagination, in saying that, when you’re a brutal death metal band it really doesn’t give much room for expression.

Overtures of Blasphemies isn’t a bad album but when there are Death Metal classics in their catalogue this one probably won’t be coming out for a spin as often as the first few albums do.
