Papa Roach – Ego Trip (Album Review)

Release Date: April 08th 2022 - New Noize Records

Papa Roach - Ego Trip

This record delivers what infest offered but in a completely different way! Let me explain, if you remember Papa Roach’s monster release Infest in 1999, It exploded into the new millennium by mixing Post Hardcore with the Rap Rock genres of the late ’90s with tremendous success and gave it mass appeal to teenage delinquents who were already big subscribers to the rap and extreme rock/punk/metal genres.

Ego trip dose this all over again.

But it does it really well by being woke to the popularity of more modern elements of those aforementioned scenes/genres and adapts the formula that worked so well for Infest with this phoenix-like eruption from the era where this album’s being launched (2022).

Stuff you can expect to hear are dubstep/trap-like beats and electronic cues mixed with some complex melodic vocal stylings that were popular in the later days of the most popular mainstream punk and hardcore scenes (fall out boy, BMTH, etc). The rap elements are up to date with the most modern and popular styles and above all else, Jacoby Shaddix delivers it all with flawless confidence.

It seems Shaddix shares my observation by stating himself that the lockdown project for them was “Purposeful, provocative, and just the right side of the line between confident and cocky”

(“I really hope Ego Trip stops a few people in their tracks”_ cackles Jacoby)

I really feel it will, and even if some old fans have outgrown their Papa Roach Days or are just not ready to hear a modern version of their once-favorite band I feel this record will win a host of new Papa Roach Fans.

If you like: If you still have a soft spot in your heart for Papa Roach this is a must-listen. If you are a throw-back fan of the post-hardcore/emo/rappy hardcore of the 2000’s you’re going to love this.

To be honest, if you enjoy modern rock you’re going to love this. Personally, this album is as exciting as infest was when I first heard it in 1999. Definitely give it a listen.

Haters be like:  If you’ve wandered away from Papa Roach and have developed a lust for the hardcore fringe genres of the heavy music scenes then this records not going to attempt to accommodate that thirst.

Don’t expect it to be Black metal or Grind, embrace it for what It offers and you might love it
