Affinity Minus Perfection – Passion Through Unity (Album Review)

Affinity Minus Perfection – Passion Through Unity

Queensland seems to be thriving with metalcore and deathcore bands of late, and if you’re caught up in the hype, you need to check out Affinity Minus Perfection’s latest release Passion Through Unity, because it is a banger. Production levels are great – exactly what you would expect from this genre – the guitars grind and leave enough room for the bottom end. The vocals, which showcase a terrific array of the Australian Bark mixed with soulful cleans, sit nicely in the mix and protrude only when necessary. The choruses and melodies are solid and I love the builds in the music. All in all, it’s quite an accomplished release.

If you’re looking for some hard-hitting traditional metalcore, then this is where it is at. The breakdowns are great, the music rocks and it’ll get you in the moshing mood, but that is where it ends, which is unfortunate.

The only letdown of this release is how it doesn’t add to the genre.

It’s safe. Too early to draw on nostalgia and too late to ride the wave of the genre. I hope I’m wrong as this is well constructed, well-executed metal, and I really hope this release gets the praise it deserves, but the pessimist in me says otherwise.

Suitable for those who were 14 in 2004.
