Perpetual Etude – Now is the Time (Album Review)

Perpetual Etude was formed in 2019 by Magnus Mild.  The intention was to resurrect the glory of 80’s heavy metal, and on first listen they have achieved this successfully with their album “Now is the Time” which is due for release on October 15 via Black Lodge Records.

The album celebrates 80’s metal with weighty riffs, tasteful solos and catchy choruses.  The newly released single “I’ve Got The Power” is a view of what you can expect from the album.  It’s spirited and energetic, and the guitar work is polished.

The debut single “Show Me” is slower in tempo, which gives room for the vocals to really stand out and once again you are treated to some blistering solo work.  The chorus is anthemic and easily ingrains itself in your head.

Some of the tracks are reminiscent of Dokken, some ooze Hammerfall influence but there is no doubt that the album is heavily influenced by the decade that defined heavy metal.  It is pure 80’s worship with a bit of something for everyone.

“Once We Were One” brings you back to the urgency of the first track, and again the chorus is addictive, the vocals are impressive yet easy to sing along to, this track would be epic played to a large crowd, it’s infectious and fun.

The album is not ground-breaking or presenting anything new, which is exactly right for a true representation of 80’s heavy metal.  It is paying homage to the era and Perpetual Etude clearly know their 80’s, metal bands!  It is instead a melting pot of many bands who have gone before, the musicianship and structure of each song seem like it has been carefully thought out to present an album that showcases the majesty of true heavy metal.  If there was a highlight reel that could capture the essence of the ’80s, “Now is the Time” comes very close indeed.

“Hell Fire Burn” is a standout, the riff is exciting, the solos are nuts, and a chanting chorus brings it all together convincingly which is bound to delight metalheads across the world.

I would recommend this album, I’m not going to define who should check it out, as it’s one that will appeal to a wide range of metal fans.  I’ll be looking forward to catching this band live sometime in the future!
