Perth’s newest heavy outfit, Pincer+, recently announced their signing to independent alternative music label, Greyscale Records and today they bring news of their debut EP, ‘Hunting God Tapes. Vol. 1: Violence‘, out Friday November 25. The band share new single “Ugly On The Skin” as the second teaser, streaming everywhere now.
“Ugly On The Skin” made its debut last night on triple j’s The Racket, and at just 1 and a half minutes long, it’s a brief but powerful track, mirroring a stream of consciousness rather than following any one predictable structure. Pummelling from its opening note, “Ugly On The Skin” is a fight song, closing with haunting audio bites that beg for a story to be told.
‘Hunting God Tapes. Vol 1: Violence’ uncovers the intrinsic human desire to be happy, or at least acknowledged and loved. Spread across five tracks, Pincer+’s debut extended release is based around mental health and takes an in-depth view into love and loss within the scope of someone processing the end of an important relationship.
From pain and loss, from hatred and heartbreak, from the feeling of being betrayed by our understanding of God and gods; Pincer+’s creation was one of furious necessity, and that rage has led to the creation of something heavy enough to make even those gods pay attention.
The full release is produced, written and recorded with in-house producer Josh Ang, with drum and vocals recorded at Perth’s Sumo Sound Studios (Shangrila) with mix and mastering credits from George Lever of G1 Productions (Loathe, Thornhill, Pridelands).
Pincer+ sonically anchored their roots with the abrasive first single, “Angeldust”, exploring aggressive hardcore sensibilities while breathing new life into the genre with its eclectic influences. The single was born from the fallout of a failed relationship and the subsequent resentment songwriter Josh Ang felt towards the world and his own beliefs.
Pincer+ is Jacson Robb on vocals, Josh Ang and Jordan Burn on guitars and Jack Nelson on drums. Pincer+ are the latest act to join the Greyscale Records roster alongside Alpha Wolf, Deadlights, Gravemind, The Beautiful Monument and more.
“There is no purer form of expression than creation,” tells the band. “In times where words fail to encapsulate the heaviest of our emotions, creation provides a canvas that is limited only by the length and breadth of our imaginations. Pincer+ grew from that place.”
