Rob Favotto - Kalki

Kalki is an avatar of Vishnu. Avatara means “descent” and refers to a descent of the divine into the material realm of human existence, and it aptly describes the third release of Australian Guitar virtuoso Rob Favotto a musician unbound by the rules of convention.

This is a guitarist, guitarist’s album. The riffing is excellent and precise, each composition a lengthy in-depth study where the music represents the metaphors. Kali Ma is the tour de force, a progressive crescendo of a track that leaves no stone unturned in its performance that is faultless, wildly experimental in its time changes and reminiscent of other guitar greats. ‘’Kalki’ is a more traditional metal anthem, blessed with all the components that make real metal great plus added breakdowns. ‘’ Narashima’ continues this idea of true metal aggression.

‘’No More’ is a varied performance of pure metal guitar and some harsh vocals delivered with a sense of urgency and fire, the thrashier undertones completed by again another excellent pairing of solos. ‘’Porn/Torn’’ is another speed metal-infused moment that combines some alternative female vocals against the dynamics held together by the power of the riff and a tremolo effect-ridden coda.

“Kalki” is an expression of art where the idea is made visceral, Mesmerizing instrumental prowess set against varied and a wealth of ideas. At times progressive and traditional each track is an affirmation of a total commitment to the instrument and the art.
