Saber is a heavy metal band from the USA formed in 2018, releasing the bands debut album ‘Without Warning’ in 2021, and sophomore album ‘Lost In Flames’ in 2025.
Heavily inspired by the eighties metal and rock scene, Saber meld the old school sound of bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Queensryche into one almighty barrage of infectious, power driven heavy metal, the band’s new album an eight song, thirty minute burst of super-charged pace and power! And setting light to the touch paper, the albums title song ‘Lost In Flames’ sets the album on an explosive upward trajectory, the Californian metallers pressing the pedal firmly to the metal after forty seconds to roar down the freeway at top speed! The meld of muscular American metal with traditional heavy metal is a glorious sound, ‘Lost In Flames’ (the song) a head turning opening salvo to attract the attentions of metalheads from all over the world! And increasing the pace, ‘Phoenix Rising’ hurtles off at high velocity, the band sending every mosh pit everywhere into fucking overdrive – moshers frantically rocking their heads back and forth!
The opening brace has been breath taking, Saber announcing their return in emphatic style, ‘Madam Dangerous’ entering the fray with an old school metal and rock feel that was so prevalent during the eighties evolution of heavy metal and hard rock – the band by no means a retro band, it’s just that ‘Madam Dangerous’ has that sound and feel from an era I know very well! I was a teenager during the eighties when bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest re-wrote and defined heavy metal as we know it today, Saber over five and a half thousand miles and forty years away from metal’s birthplace in the UK, yet very much inspired by the British sound! And talking of the British sound, ‘Shattered Dreams’ places the iconic metal gallop front and centre as the intensity of ‘Lost In Flames’ (the album) maintains its unbroken streak right through the heart of the album. And shuddering the ground with more force than any other song heard so far, ‘Time Tells’ is a cracking example of red hot, foot to the floor traditional heavy metal with insane head bang ability – Saber knowing exactly what’s needed to keep the mosh pits moshing!
The pace of the album up to this point has been relentless, the American five piece taking their foot off the gas for ‘Shadow Of You’, a much more mellower feel descending upon ‘Lost In Flames’ (the album) as Saber build a tension fuelled crescendo of anticipation – anticipation that’s richly rewarded as the band let all hell break loose by slamming the hammer down and roaring off at full throttle! Standing proudly in the centre of the heavy metal genre, the band continue their old school come new school onslaught with the hard rocking ‘On The Hunt’, Saber straddling the boundary between metal and rock to widen the band’s audience to new widths! And bringing a fairly short yet engaging album to a close, ‘Steel Breaker’ is a lively and up tempo finale that ends ‘Lost In Flames’ (the album) as it began, by roaring down the freeway at top speed.
Overall, a fast-paced thirty-minute tirade of traditional heavy metal with tonnes of energy and oomph!
